To My Loyal Fanbase:*

I believe that it is high time that I introduce you all to one of the many domains that I have collected over the years… Fanbase, meet NippleorFriedEgg. I know that the name will probably get your mental spam filters kicking into overdrive. Don’t sweat it yet, everything is 110% PG. In fact right now I am using the site to host a flash gallery of my own favorite pictures. Don’t believe me? Check it out quickly. Mouse over the link above and see the SnapPreview (I also plan on sharing just how I set that gallery up, so bear with me)

First, a bit of backstory… how the hell did I end up with a domain like that?? I guess somehow it starts with a drunken adventure with a short red headed smartass from Right Media. Halfway through a business dinner in Sunnyvale he started bragging about how he was in a meeting with all sorts of high level Y! execs and they were proudly bragging about their latest and greatest image detection software that could tell the difference between a nipple and a fried egg; no matter if the picture was a thumbnail or uber high res. If you think that color vs. black and white might throw it for a loop, you have another thing coming. Anyways, after a few drinks we decided that our best chance of making a quick million dollars was to buy the domain, and put up pictures of… you guessed it, nipples and fried eggs. I figured it might be a cult classic within a few hours. All we had to do was throw some banner ads at the bottom of the page and let the $$’s roll in. So we raced to buy the domain… somehow I won even though I couldn’t really see what I was typing into godaddy.com. (Like my idea? Buy your own, godaddy suggested a lot of great sister domains. NippleandFriedOvum.com , nippleoreggs.biz, you get the picture.) So a few months passed and I had yet to put up any sort of content. After seeing the domainer parked page on my site this afternoon I decided I had to put up something of my own so that I stopped raking in the pennies for go daddy.

I searched high and low for an easily setup photo gallery. After playing around with Gallery I was quickly fed up with the dozens of options, settings, and customizations. I was looking for something a bit simpler. Then I stumbled upon a flash gallery called simpleviewer: made by the folks at AirTight Interactive

simpleviewer

I was immediately taken by how simple and fast the gallery operated. I knew that since it was governed by an .swf and xml “imagelist” it would be fairly easy to setup.

Step 1: Download the SimpleViewer Here
Step 2: Unzip the file you just downloaded
Step 3: Upload the extracted files to your domain
Step 4: Update the xml file and upload your pictures.
Step 4.5: Customize!!!

Ok so editing an xml file and manually generating thumbnails isnt all that fun. Good thing there are several options for automation.

*svManager is the easy way to manage your SimpleViewer galleries. svManager is a PHP application that runs on your webserver. It provides a user interface for managing SimpleViewer galleries.

*Automatic via Desktop software: Automatically create a SimpleViewer gallery using desktop software (such as PhotoShop, Picasa, iPhoto, RapidWeaver, Aperture, Lightroom). View Automatic Desktop Instructions.

*Automatic via Server-side Script: Automatically create a SimpleViewer gallery using a script that runs on your web server. Scripts are provided for PHP, ASP and Cold Fusion. View Automatic via Server-side Script Instructions.

*Manual: Manually create a SimpleViewer gallery using a text editor and image editing software of your choice. View Manual Instructions. ( I dont recommend this unless you love to pull your hair out… personally I can’t afford to lose nary a strand)

*FlickrViewer allows you view Flickr photo sets using SimpleViewer. Dustin Senos has updated FlickrViewer to work with SimpleViewer v1.8.

*Using WordPress: WP-SimpleViewer is a plug in to easily integrate SimpleViewer galleries into Wordpress.

I chose the server side script and everything worked flawlessly. So if you are in need of a quick way to share your photos in a professional and clean manner, look no further than simpleviewer.

Please check back soon for updates. I will be trying to implement the flickr sets functionality as soon as I have some more free time.

*which sits at 2 right now from my Feedburner stats :o) no wait, one. I subscribe to my own feed… crap how depressing!
